Application to ULSS CREATE

Admission to the Queen's School of Computing

Admission to the NSERC CREATE graduate specialization in Ultra-Large Scale Software Systems begins with registration as an MSc or PhD student in the Queen's School of Computing. See this website for information on applying for admission to the School. Remember to specify your interest in the ULSS CREATE program when you apply.

Applying to the Graduate Specialization in ULSS (PhD / Research MSc)

Admission to the ULSS CREATE program for the PhD and Research MSc streams requires an application from both the student and the potential supervisor. You can begin your application either concurrently with your application to the School of Computing, or after you have been admitted to the School.

Since ULSS CREATE PhD and Research MSc students are funded by the program, your chances of admission to the School may be improved if you pursue admission to ULSS concurrently. Students already admitted to the School may apply to join the ULSS CREATE program at any time during their first year of study. There are a limited number of ULSS CREATE research positions, so you should apply early.

Student Application
Application to the ULSS CREATE program has two parts. The student applies directly to the program specifying a proposed supervisor, and then the supervisor applies for ULSS CREATE funding to support the student. The process begins with the student applying for admission to the School of Computing, and contacting a potential supervisor chosen from the list of program committee and faculty members on the ULSS People page.

Faculty Application
Once a faculty member has agreed to pursue a ULSS CREATE position for the student, he or she applies to have a ULSS CREATE position assigned to the student. The faculty member contacts the ULSS CREATE Program Director requesting that the student be assigned a position. The request must specify: the name and contact information of the student and proposed supervisor; the degree sought; the name of the industrial partner; the level of support required from the ULSS CREATE program; and the application number and status of the student's application for admission to the School of Computing.

The application will be considered by the ULSS CREATE admissions committee and both the student and the supervisor will be informed of the decision within one week of application. A positive decision does not imply admission to the School of Computing, which remains a requirement for participation in the program.

Applying to the Graduate Specialization in ULSS (Project MSc)

Admission to the Project MSc requires only an application from the student - no potential supervisor is required to apply (although one will be required later to supervise your practical project). Applications should be sent directly to the ULSS Program Director specifying the name and contact information of the student; the degree sought; and the application number and status of the student's application for admission to the School of Computing.

The application will be considered by the ULSS CREATE admissions committee and the student will be informed of the decision within one week of application. A positive decision does not imply admission to the School of Computing, which remains a requirement for participation in the program.
